On thanking people

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 27, 2009, 3:46 PM
Although I'm a lazy shit about replying to comments, I generally make sure to visit everyone's page who watches/collects something I've drawn... Sometimes, I see comments on userpages from very, very popular users (think 1mil+ pageviews) saying thank you for faving an image. Considering the amount of faves these people get on each deviation they submit, the amount of commenting and page-visiting these people must do is insane. There's only so many ways to say "thank you for the fave" so after a while it's just saying the same five words over and over again, and for the sake of their fingers I can only assume it's copied and pasted. While I have no real feelings on the matter either way (except that I am rather awestruck at the amount of time it must take to comment on 20k+ watcher/fave messages), I wonder how people who get the comments see it: Is it nice to see such a popular artist is still down to earth enough to pay individual attention to each person who likes their work, or is it just emotionless copypasta with no real meaning behind it except to broaden ones exposure?

I was thinking the exact same ._. What the hell, do people think that when I leave thank you notes?

I like to think they're really there, and that they care. but i don't think on it too much :)

It can not be defined simply as just an automated "copy and paste" response when the artist takes the time to, like you said, reply to the ridiculous amount of people who fav their work. They could always just write a journal thanking people every month, and I'm sure they have better things to do with their time....But instead, they choose to use that precious time to thank you/us.

When you fav someones work...you're really thanking the artist for posting that piece of art for you to enjoy in the first place.

It's the least the viewer can do.

Thank YOU Leaunoire, for sharing your stunning artwork with us! ^.^

I usually take it as a sign that the popular artist is trying to be genuine. I don't usually attach bad meaning to something like that.

I'm glad you do heehee. I just don't know why someone would assume that a nice gesture has something shady about it. So if a popular artist favs my work, I will have to reply to their comment or send them a note or else people will think I'm trying to steal pageviews that don't matter. -_-

I much prefer having more awesome things from you in my deviantwatch than a copypasta on my page. Me faving your stuff is kinda like me saying "thank you" to you (you know, for sharing your art with me, even if it is indirect), and if you thanked me back that would be a little awkward...

I am always happy when someone expresses gratitude, even if it's a copypaste. At least the awknowledge that they do notice your attention to them.

I don't hold it against more popular deviants, I don't always manage to respond to my favers watchers commenters etc. And I don't get much attention, so I can't imagine how hectic it must be to have your inbox flooding and trying to show gratitude to each.

I think the fact they popped by, possibly glanced around at your page, does mean something. I personally try not to copy paste unless I'm exhausted or just being fave raped. Often if I don't feel up to it, I'll leave favs sitting for a day or two and then try to type something meaningful-ish. Sometimes for my watchers who fav me repeatedly I take a stroll through their galleries and leave a comment or two; possibly with advice if they work in the same medium as me.
