On thanking people

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 27, 2009, 3:46 PM
Although I'm a lazy shit about replying to comments, I generally make sure to visit everyone's page who watches/collects something I've drawn... Sometimes, I see comments on userpages from very, very popular users (think 1mil+ pageviews) saying thank you for faving an image. Considering the amount of faves these people get on each deviation they submit, the amount of commenting and page-visiting these people must do is insane. There's only so many ways to say "thank you for the fave" so after a while it's just saying the same five words over and over again, and for the sake of their fingers I can only assume it's copied and pasted. While I have no real feelings on the matter either way (except that I am rather awestruck at the amount of time it must take to comment on 20k+ watcher/fave messages), I wonder how people who get the comments see it: Is it nice to see such a popular artist is still down to earth enough to pay individual attention to each person who likes their work, or is it just emotionless copypasta with no real meaning behind it except to broaden ones exposure?

honestly, even knowing that it may be copied and pasted, i still appreciate it when ANYONE takes the time to come and thank me. i also like it because it gets people to see my front page and my artwork may possibly catch their eye. it works well for all parties, both as a kind and humble gesture to their fans and i think they can possibly gain exposure anytime someone's name is put on another page.

I comment a thank you for every fave and especially comment from a person, but I also make it a point to see their gallery, and read their journal (I've made many good friends this way that I would have missed otherwise)... And as to the thank you, it is copy-pasted, but a funny fact is that if you post more than about 50 comments in a short while (no matter how different the comments) dA gets you down as spam and stops you from posting anything (even replying to your comments) -- as I found out after my DD :XD:

Personally, though, I don't mind that someone doesn't respond to my faves/comments on their work -- even if they don't drop by my page at all. Having a damn hectic life, I know what it's like to come home, see a bunch of faves in your folder and think, "Ohhh I so want to check them out" and then realising just how many assignments are due in. It's not easy balancing both online and real time life, sometimes there are sacrifices.

It doesn't make a difference to me. It's polite, but I doubt it's some deep expression of profound gratitude. And if I watch someone, it's because I want to see their art, not because I'm expecting anything personal from them.

But I'm a bitch, so.

I hide such comments on my front page haha. I don't know--normally when I fave or add someone to my watch, I leave a comment. If they're going to thank me, I'd much rather it be as a reply to the comment I left, otherwise it feels like...bad self advertising or something. Plus the mindless emotionless nature of it is an irksome thing to have cluttering your front page as well.

It's not something that makes me belligerent with rage or anything--it's just an annoying peeve of mine.

For some reason it would make me feel better. However, as far as I've seen.. well... many high and mighty artists are just too busy. I don't blame them, but it does feel a bit like being ignored. Oh well~ We can't all be famous~
(Though once again, I love your artwork~)

I usually say thank you individually not for my own exposure, but because it's a way of saying "hey thanks, I visited you back".

Even if I'm copying-pasting the message, I actually look at the galleries I leave the "thank you" message in. When I don't feel like leaving a thank you note it doesn't mean i'm less grateful, but that I'm not going to have time to look at the gallery, so I don't bother to leave an empty message :]

I'd prefer if a popular artist didn't thank me for faving something of theirs, since, as you said, they probably get tons of faves and thanking everyone would take up so much time that they wouldn't be able to work on their art! XD that said, it doesn't mean I'm not grateful when someone does take the time to leave a thanks message.

Personally, I only thank people for watching me because I just can't be assed to do the faves thing. >>

Wow, man. o.o; I'unno what to say. And I guess the fans would be kind of excited about it, too. Recieving a comment from an artist they really like.... >A< I don't want to believe that it means nothing, but oh well. I guess that's how it is.

I'm fond of getting thank-you comments, but I totally understand that people have better things to do.

I used to comment on every one, until I realized how I felt about receiving that kind of comment. It's kind of disappointing. I'll see in my inbox that I have a comment, thinking it's on one of my deviations or something, but then it turns out it's just a generic thank you.

I want comments to mean something and not be easily mistaken for copying and pasting the same line. Even if you're commenting on a picture just to say that you like it, it still means a lot more because you actually felt that way - you didn't just do it as a standard reaction to something that might not even mean much.

(I still do thank people for faves on my Uboa plushie, though. But that's really just for the novelty of being able to post :iconuboa::iconfaveplz: at them. Because it tends to freak people out and I'm terrible like that.)
